Discovery Club on Ice | ||
![]() | What an unusal winter. In late December and through January we had record high temperature. Over 40 days in a row with air temperature over 32 degrees Fahrenheit. We were afraid we couldn't get on the ice at all
![]() | We weren't very brave. We walked out where we know that water was on a foot or so deep. Still, we heard cracks. We drilled a hole and quickly measured the ice thickness and dissolved oxygen, then quickly retreated.
![]() | Here's the data we collected 1. Ice Thickness 3.5 inches 2. Nitrate = undetectable 3. Dissolved Oxgyen = 6 ppm at surface, 0 ppm at bottom. Water very clear, little evidence of zooplankton. Water levels were down...at least ten feet down from high water mark |
