Discovery Club on Ice- Jan 19, 2004

club members

Here's the brave members of Discovery Club who ventured out on the ice to make our winter water quality measurements.
Drilling

As usual, we walked out to the lake depth marker that the DNR placed in the lake back in 1992. A 1 1/2 inch of snow had fallen the night before, but underneath the ice was mirror smooth. Club members had fun slipping and sliding. When we got out there, we drilled a hole using an ice auger. Gee...it was a lot harder than we thought it would be.
Measuring Ice Thickness  Here's the data we collected
1. Ice Thickness 9 inches
2. Lake Depth 5ft 9 in
3. dissolved oxygen 12ppm at surface, near zero at bottom
4. Nitrate = > 4.4 ppm
5. Water was greenish with lots of zooplankton
6. Temperature at botton 4.5 degrees celcius
