Discovery Club on Ice- Jan 29, 2003

geese on patrick marsh

A flock of about one hundred geese has prevented the lake from closing over this year. This is the first year that anyone can remember this happening. Perhaps the lack of snow cover allowed the geese to forage for food and kept them around
Drilling

As usual, we walked out to the lake depth marker that the DNR placed in the lake back in 1992. A 1/2 inch of snow had fallen the night before, but underneath the ice was mirror smooth. Club members had fun slipping and sliding. When we got out there, we drilled a hole using an ice auger. Gee...it was a lot harder than we thought it would be.
Measuring Ice Thickness  Here's the data we collected
1. Ice Thickness 12 inches
2. Lake Depth 5ft 8 in
3. pH = 8.0
4. Nitrate = 0.88 ppm
5. Water was greenish with lots of zooplankton
