Fork-tailed Flycatcher

On Saturday, October 28, 2000, the wildlife biologist Mike Foy identified the extremely rare fork-tailed flycatcher hanging out at Patrick Marsh Wildlife Area. Soon the emails were flying and the sighting came to the attention of Alan Crossley who is the DNR contact for the Discovery Club. Alan emailed Sandy Kintner and Sandy phoned Mark Smith, a 7th grade science teacher at PMMS. Lucky, the Discovery Club was meeting that Monday and the bird had decided to stay around. A whole group of club members got to see the bird which is very unafraid of people. Some club members were able to get within 15 feet of the bird. Very Cool!!! This bird usually lives in Mexico or South American and has only been sighted in Wisconsin on two other occasions. Once in 1978 in Columbia County and again in 1988 in Douglas County. This picture was taken of the bird at Patrick Marsh Wildlife Area by John Idzikowski and is used with his permission.
