Migratory Birds

Why

Why do we care about migratory birds? Migratory birds are an excellent indicator of the overall health of an ecosystem. When bird species are declining, we should be concerned. Migratory birds face serious challenges and many species are in decline because of habitat loss, collisions with artificial structures, and environmental contaminants. Because migratory birds cross the boundaries of nations, watersheds, and ecosystems, it is necessary to monitor their population where ever we can. Discovery club members are also interested in whether Patrick Marsh Wildlife Area can become a breeding area for migratory birds.

What We Saw
Using binoculars and a spotting scope, club members observed, identified and counted the many migratory birds that use Patrick Marsh as a temporary home.
