Amphibians
Why?

We want to monitor the frogs at Patrick Marsh because frogs are widely considered to be early warning indicators of potential human health risks due to the environment. They are a kind of ecological equivalent to the “canary in the coal-mine“ alarm system. Because frogs are extremely sensitive to environmental changes and declines in their population levels or health changes in individuals are often the first signs of something out of balance in an ecosystem. Frog populations around the world are shrinking. Causes have been linked to parasites and pesticides. There has also been an increase in the report of deformed frogs. So far we haven't found any. We are also interested in salamanders because an increasing or stable number of salamanders would indicate that the ecosystem's balance of invertebrates, leaf litter, moisture, pH, debris, burrows, and other habitat features were positive, while declines would mean a decline in the environmental conditions.

Punk Racer Duck Pond

The PMMS Discovery Club started its first monitoring program for amphibians in the Spring of 2000. We choose as our site a small temporary pool next to the large lake. This seemed like the most likely habitat to find amphibians. We named this site Punk Racer Duck Pond

Drop Traps

To catch the amphibians we used a simple device called a drop trap. To make a drop trap, we collected #10 cans from our cafeteria. The bottom was then cut out of one can and duct taped to the top of another can. Holes were punched in bottom for drainage.

Drift Nets

Drifts nets are pieces of sheet metal that are 6 meters long and 3/4 meter wide. They are laid into trenches we dug into the ground and then packed with dirt so they stay vertical. When amphibians run into the drift net they travel along it until they fall into a can. Ideally, cans are placed at both ends and in the middle.

Installing Traps

To install traps we dug a hole into the ground using a post hole digger. Then, we inserted a can into the ground being sure to make sure the edge of the can was lower then the ground. Salamanders will not walk up over a lip. Trap covers were construct out of plastic sheets cut in to one foot squares. We drilled holes in the four corners and placed 3 in bolts with nuts to make feet for the covers. When the traps were not set we turned the cover over
