  1. Small Mammal Survey 133 traps were set at six sites on six different weeks. 14 animals were trapped, data collected, and then released. Track tubes were placed on 4 different weeks.

  2. Amphibian Monitoring 14 traps at 4 sites around the punk racer duck pond pond were set on 10 different weeks. 23 animals were caught, data collected and released.

  3. Migratory Birds The number of individuals and the number of species was recorded on 12 different weeks in the fall and 10 different weeks in the spring.

  4. Prairie Seed Collection Club members helped to collected prairie seeds from Patrick Marsh Wildlife Area for use in restored prairie at Patrick Marsh Middle School.

  5. Insect Sweep In the fall insect sweeps where conducted. Some sweeps were examined immediately and some were frozen for examination at later date.

  6. Lake Temp and Water Chemistry Lake temp was monitored weekly. In the fall water from lake was sampled at three sites and analyzed for pH, Phosphates, Carbon Dioxide, Oxygen

  7. Invertebrates In the fall and spring water samples were collected and examined for invertebrates (zooplankton)

  8. Field Days for Elementary Students 18 elementary students were brought to the marsh (once in fall, once this spring) to see a demonstration of the club activities.

  9. Preparation of Powerpoint Presentations A digital camera was used to document the activities of the club. Pictures from the digital camera were used to prepare Powerpoint presentations of the results of our migratory bird, small mammal, amphibian, and lake temp studies. The Powerpoint slide show was used in presentations to our speakers and to the Parent-Teacher organization at Patrick Marsh.

  11. Field Trips
  12. Automated Weather Station Club member used data from weather station at Patrick Marsh Middle School to correlate with the results of their field studies. Real time data from the weather station is now available at http://www.aws.com/realtime.asp?id=SNPRE

  13. By Youth for Youth Grant Club member came up with the idea of inviting the community out to Patrick Marsh to highlight the marsh as a educational resource. They then wrote a grant to fund the project.

  14. Marsh Adventure Day To be held May 13. See attached grant

  15. Website
WACTY grant was awarded to one club member who will create a website for the Discovery Club this summer that will make the research data available to the public. Also will allow the weather data from the automated weather station at Patrick Marsh to be easily accessed.

  16. GIS Training
Nancy Schlimgen and Chris Kintner attended a GIS training on UW campus.

  17. Royal Oaks
75 elementary students from Royal Oaks visited marsh. Discovery club members staffed stations (sm. mammals, invertebrates, amphibians, birds, fish) and made presentations to the students.
