Repairing the Drift Nets

pond1
What a difference 10 days can make. Now, the small pond is unfrozen and there was even duck weed growing on top.

drif nets
The first order of business was getting the dift nets repaired and ready for our amphibian monitoring. The ground was still frozen on the nets with northern exposure and we were unable to get some of the can traps out of the ground. We were able to repair nets and traps at site 1 (A,C,E), site 2 (A,C,D,E) and site 3 (B,C). See results 99 for location of sites. Now we will wait for a rain to set our traps.

snails
We were surprised to "discover" many snails who had decided to winter underneath one of the drift nets which the weeds had pulled to the ground. We "wondered" what made it so attractive to them."
We also observed the first gulls at the marsh, who had come to feed on the large winter fish kill.
Please check back in the future to see what we catch.
